The diamond capital of the world is known for its great tasting beers, modern art museums and Belgian chocolates. The must-sees, like the Central Station, Cathedral of Our Lady Antwerp and MAS Museum Aan de Stroom, can become overdone after the first few visits.
How to get away from the crowds? Well… Visit these 5 places you didn’t know existed in Antwerp.
1. The Chocolate Line
Not a line of cocaine but a line of cacao. It’s possible at the Chocolate Line on The Meir. Why? It’s “another way of tasting it”, the owner said.
Maybe snorting chocolate isn’t for you? That’s okay, there is more to do. Buy and taste their gourmet chocolate, watch a chocolatier in action, and see a dress that’s completely made out of chocolate.
2. Giraffe Square
Wanna see some exotic animals for free? Next to the railway station is Antwerp’s zoo. But if you don’t feel like paying for a ticket, go to below spot.
At this square, it’s likely to see the giraffes’ heads comically bob over a wall! The square was named the Giraffe Square for this reason.
3. Markt van Morgen
There is a thriving market culture in Antwerp. On the hipper end of the scale is the Markt van Morgen (or the Market of Tomorrow in English).
Everything can be found here from jewelry, clothing, furniture, graphic posters and whimsical tote bags. On special Sundays, the market is partly taken over by local designer talent and artwork!
If you start to get hungry, the market has colorful foodie caravans serving up sandwiches, soups, cupcakes and coffee.
4. Party at Pekfabriek
After a full day walking around Antwerp, you might want to hype up and go somewhere more upbeat. Pekfabriek is a truly local party venue where parties are unpredictable and lit with crazy neon lights.
The parties are held at an old pitch factory in the Borgerhout commune. The DJs who play here are very underground, creating an exciting and memorable experience.
The best way to keep in touch with the party program is to check the Plaza Real Facebook page.
5. Sunset on ‘t Volt
Make sure to visit ‘t Vlot during your Antwerp trip. It’s is a large wooden deck by the waterside where young locals come to chill and have fun.
Grab some special beers, play cards and watch the sunset to the tune of guitar players playing melodies next to you.
